THE 'GREAT TALE' OF THE CHILDREN OF HURIN, SET DURING THE LEGENDARY TIME BEFORE THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwells in the vast fortress of Angband in the North; and within the shadow of the tear of Angband, and the war waged by Morgoth against the Elves, the fates of Turin and his sister Nienor will be tragically entwined.
Their brief and passionate lives are dominated by the elemental hatred that Morgoth bears them as the children of Hurin, the man who dared to defy him to his face. Against them Morgoth sends his most formidable servant, Glaurung,
a powerful spirit in the form of a huge wingless dragon of fire, in an attempt to fulfil the curse of Morgoth and destroy the children of Hurin.

'I hope that its universality and power will grant it a place in English mythology' Independent on Sunday

'The darkest of all Tolkien's tales. Alan Lee's illustrations complement the writing splendidly'
Times Literary Supplement

J. R. R. Tolkien was born in South Africa in 1892. After serving as a lieutenant in the First World War, he had a distinguished academic career and was recognised as one of the finest philologists in the world (philology is the study of literature). He held numerous professorships, and was awarded many prestigious prizes. He died in 1973.
The Hobbit, Professor Tolkien's first published work, begins the tale which continues with the three much longer volumes of The Lord of the Rings. It started as a family story told to his children in the 1930s - and once published it met with instant success. It has been in print in a variety of different editions ever since.

"A finely written saga of dwarves and elves, fearsome goblins and trolls... an exciting epic of travel and magical adventure, all working up to a devastating climax." Observer

"A flawless masterpiece." The Times
